Sleep disorders and asthma are receiving increasing exposure in the media. It is now estimated that over 2 million individuals in the UK suffer from asthma, and an increasing number of adults are being diagnosed with sleep apnoea – a condition in which people hold there breath during sleep and constantly wake throughout the night, with the resultant day time fatigue. The Buteyko Breathing Method is achieving wonderful results in helping people reduce their asthma and the need for medication, and allow people to sleep soundly throughout the night without resorting to CPAP machines. The appropriate age to learn Buteyko is from three years and there is no upper limit.

Clinical trials in Australia , New Zealand and the United Kingdom have all shown that people who learn Buteyko for asthma substantially reduce both their asthma and their need for medication. The results of the first UK trial were presented to the British Thoracic Society on 4 December 2003 and were published in the Thorax Journal of Respiratory Medicine (Dec 2003, Vol 58, Sup III). They showed that 6 months after learning Buteyko, people had average reductions of over 90% for reliever medications, preventer medications and asthma symptoms. People who learn Buteyko also experience improved sleeping patterns, better concentration and enhanced capacity for physical exercise.

The world's first clinical trial of the Buteyko Method for sleep apnoea commenced in Gisborne , New Zealand in November 2004 and is being coordinated by Dr Patrick McHugh.
