The Method

Buteyko Institute Method (BIM) of Breathing Retraining - The BIM.is named after Professor Konstantin Buteyko .The Professor made his discovery as a Medical student during the 1950`s, when he was charged with an assignment to observe the respiratory problems of terminally ill patients`.What he concluded from his observations was that the breathing patterns were linked to disease rather than due to imminent death.

From this he went on to test his theory on patients with various conditions and recorded his results. Many conditions responded positively but the impact with Asthma was the most impressive .Patients reported improvement within a very short period of time , usually 24hrs.With this in mind he proceeded to promote his method for the management of Asthma and has to date had three Ministry of Health endorsements for his method as the first line management of Asthma.
The method was introduced to the Western World by one of the Professor`s protégé`s Alexander Stalmatski (Sasha). Initially the method was introduced to the western world in Australia in 1990, and was then brought to the UK in 1995. The Buteyko Institute of Breathing and Health Inc. was established in Australia in 1996 and now has practitioner members in 12 countries.
The Method is taught on an individual assessment basis. It is necessary to identify accurate lung function to enable the practitioner to devise a programme of exercises according to the client's ability, and degree of severity of the condition. Due to the fact that the response to the breathing retraining is so rapid, requires the method to be taught in five 90 minute sessions over five days. This allows for ongoing assessment and adjustment of the exercise programme to individual need.

The Principles of the programme give education on.

Nose Clearing - Volume of Breathing - Posture - Identifying Symptoms - Managing Symptoms - Identifying Triggers - Managing Infections / Viruses - Sleeping - Dietary Requirements - Individual Personalized Programme
